A Field Study, Exploring, & Biking

DAY 79, MONDAY, APRIL 1ST

I’m definitely feeling the week of travel, I am TIRED today. I took the morning slow and went to my afternoon classes and grabbed lunch with a friend in between to catch up on our weeks. After class I went home for dinner and did some work. Nothing too exciting, just getting back into the swing of things!

DAY 80, TUESDAY, APRIL 2ND

Today was another pretty normal, not-so-exciting day (which I don’t mind after a week of travel). I had my morning classes and then after my classes I just worked on some homework since we’re getting to the point where I need to start thinking about my end of year papers😱 After just hanging and trying to get work done I headed home for dinner. After dinner we had pancakes (pancakes means crepes, not “American pancakes”) which were quite yummy. Apparently the traditionally French way of eating them is with some lemon juice and sugar so I tried one like that.

DAY 81, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3RD

Today’s our day off from classes but I had a field study today! My Danish class went out to Dragør which is a small fishing town on the eastern coast of Amager (an island just south of Copenhagen (but still considered part of the greater Copenhagen area)). During WW2 the Danes saved 95% of the Jews living in Denmark, and this happened at Dragør by hiding them in boats and shipping them to Sweden which was neutral during the war. So in Dragør we got a walking tour by a local historian who told us all the details of this story and showed us around. It was a really interesting tour and we ended it with philosophizing about if we can compare the situation of the Jews during the Holocaust and the present-day plight of refugees attempting to seek entrance into Europe.

After the tour we headed back to the city and I hung out in a cafe with two friends from that class for about an hour. Then I met a friend to explore a couple spots in Copenhagen. We went to Bellevue beach which is north of the city and a really nice beach area and we went to Dyrehaven- the deer park I’ve been to before with my host mom. Not too far into the park we found a HUGE heard of deer (and a lot to albino deer??) so that was fun.

I headed home after our walk around there. Once home, I relaxed for 30 min before I went on my first bike ride in Denmark!! My host mom took me around where we live- up to a big cemetery and to some lakes nearby. It was a beautiful day and a fun ride. Although it has definitely been a minute since I’ve been on a bike so I’m not quite ready for anything too long or crazy. We ended up doing ~10 km (6ish miles) with plenty of stops to look around. After I got back I helped chop the salad for dinner.

DAY 82, THURSDAY, APRIL 4TH

Went in to the city a little earlier than normal today to try and get work done in the city. Went to classes like normal. Came home for dinner and packed for tomorrow! My host family is going away this weekend and I'm going with! Stay tuned!
