Back in Hamburg

DAY 83, FRIDAY, APRIL 5TH

Woke up at 5:30 today to head to Hamburg, Germany with my host family. We’re spending the weekend there just sight seeing and shopping. We brought some breakfast from the house and ate it on the ferry from Denmark to Germany. It took us about 4.5 hours total to drive there- it was a pretty smooth trip. We are staying in a hotel in Hafencity which is a brand new part of the city were there is still a lot of construction going on. We parked the car at the hotel and then walked around the area near the hotel including going to a lookout deck in the philharmonic hall nearby. We also stopped at a super popular coffee shop where they roast the beans in-house! Eventually we walked back to get lunch which we brought from home. After lunch we went back out walking around the city and went to some shops. We also walked around the water.

Hamburg is a huge port city so there is ton of water/canals/harbor area/boats. We stopped at a German pub and had a beer before getting dinner at a Turkish restaurant. After dinner we took the scenic route walking home and then went to bed early after such an early morning.

DAY 84, SATURDAY, APRIL 6TH

We ate breakfast in the hotel at 9 AM before heading out around 10:30. We started the day with in a long walk all down by the harbor.

We walked into the Old Elbe Tunnel underground that’s over a 100 years old and was the first river tunnel on the continent.

We did a lot more walking through the city including through saint Pauli area, the red light district area, and eventually through the botanical garden area. The garden wasn’t in full bloom but a few things here or there were blooming and it still looked pretty!

We grabbed a sandwich for lunch and then some ice cream since the weather was BEAUTIFUL today and its vacation so ice cream is a must. A family after my own heart. After that we headed to the maritime museum, it was absolutely ginormous and had tons of information, boats, models, uniforms, paintings, etc. took us about 2 hours to get through that. After that we soaked up the sun with a drink outside before heading back to the hotel to rest.

Me and my host sister, Amalie.

Had some pizza for dinner tonight!

DAY 85, SUNDAY, APRIL 7TH

In our last day in Hamburg today, we did a boat tour. The tour was a bit different from others I've done because the canals in Hamburg can’t fit boats so this boat tour was more a tour of the harbor and port part of the city. It was surprisingly interesting to hear all about different ships and such.

After the boat tour we stopped for a small lunch and then got in the car and headed home. I gotta be honest- driving 5 hours with three people in the back row is not much fun, but we made it eventually. When we got home it was just a relaxing evening and some catching up with work.
