DAY 38, MONDAY, FEBRUARY 18TH
Today was back to classes and doing some catching up after missing some classes last week. I dad to be in the city by 11:30 to apply for a permanent residence card, which all went smoothly so hopefully they let me stay. After that I just had my normal Monday classes before going home for dinner. But before dinner I made some banana bread with my host mom. Last week some bananas we had were going bad so we started talking about what we do with rotting bananas and I said we usually use them for banana bread and smooths. Apparently banana bread is not a thing here really since my host says she usually makes “banana cake" which definitely sounded more cakey than banana bread. So of course we had to check this discrepancy out so my host mom found a recipe for banana bread and we made that so she could tell whether they were different things. We ate the banana bread after dinner and it tasted good to me- a pretty normal banana bread, but I think it's definitely different from banana cake which is way more dessert-y than the bread version. We will compare once more bananas go bad and we make the cake version! Also in the evening we playing a couple rounds of Sequence- after playing Sequence with their family friends in Sweden my host family bought the game for themselves today since they enjoyed it so much.
DAY 39, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 19TH
The early morning wake up this morning was made better by our danish teacher bringing in fastelavnsboller (the pastries special for the holiday at this time of year I've had homemade a couple times before). Have to admit the bakery-made ones were just as good if not a little better than the homemade ones! After my morning classes I met with a friend at a neat cafe to start planning our free travel week in late March! We have a week break/spring break in late march that we are going to use to travel to a couple other cities in Europe so we started searching for some options and flights. After talking with her for a couple hours I headed over to a library in the city to work on a paper. I got a decent amount of work done before I went home for dinner. After dinner we played some more sequence and ate the rest of the banana bread. My host mom also surprised me with a Kinder Surprise (a chocolate egg candy for kids with a plastic egg and a toy inside) since the previous day we had talked about they’re illegal in the US.
DAY 40, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 20TH
No field studies planned for today but a Danish assignment to do! I did some laundry and had a slow morning working on some homework before going into the city around 2. I met up with 3 people from my Danish class to work on a cultural assignment we were given. For this project we had to visit a couple spots in Copenhagen and then we will later have to write up about it. Our first stop was the Rosenborg Castle which was built in the early 17th century and now contains a lot of history, artifacts, and most famously the crown jewels and coronation thrones.
After visiting for about an hour (it closed at 3), we headed to Skt. Peders Bageri. Our task was to get a pastry or coffee and discuss the pros and cons of hygge. This bakery is pretty popular since it is the oldest in Copenhagen and has delicious pastries. However, it is especially popular on Wednesdays because they sell onsdagssnegle ("Wednesday snail") for 18 dkk (a little less than $3), they are basically giant cinnamon rolls for fairly cheap. They apparently sell over 4,000 every wednesday and the hype did not disappoint, they were delicious!!

After talking and eating, we headed to Frihedsstøtten or "Liberty Memorial", which is a really large obelisk in the middle of the city. Which I didn’t know much about but after doing the project I’ve learned it celebrates the abolition of a specific form of serfdom in 1788.

I walked the long way back to the bus stop to enjoy the nice weather and then headed home for dinner.
For dinner we had frikadeller, the traditional Danish meatballs, again, which I like. I have quite a bit of work to do this week so I spent the rest of the night doing that.
DAY 41, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21ST
Took advantage of the late mornings yet again to do some laundry and got work done before headed into the city for classes. I'm trying to get as much work done as possible since I will be gone all weekend (in Amsterdam!!!). After classes I went with a few friends from my core course to get sushi. We did an all you can eat deal that was pretty expensive but the sushi was pretty good and it was fun to hang out and eat together! After dinner I headed home to pack and get ready to leave tomorrow!!!!!
