Dublin Part 2

DAY 54, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6TH

Today we had a later start so I got to sleep in a bit!! We met our class in the lobby at 10:45 am for our first activity of the day- digital nudity. Our professor took all of our phones for 2 hours in which we were allowed to do whatever we wanted. We were supposed to experience and reflect on what it’s like to walk around what our phones (no time, no google maps, no calling or texting or social media). In that free time me and a few friends headed to the Dublin castle (using our handy dandy paper map). There wasn’t a whole lot to see there but the castle was built as the home to the English representative in Dublin when Ireland was ruled by England. We also saw rooms where coronations are held. After the castle I headed over to the Christ Church Cathedral, founded c.1028, is an important of Irish state and religious history. I really enjoyed the architecture and the references to King William and Queen Mary of England (even got to help out the tour guide near us when he couldn’t remember whether the “William & Mary College” was the second oldest college in the US or not, had to take that opportunity to jump in (: ).

After walking through the Cathedral and its crypts we headed to the Westin hotel in Dublin for high tea!!! Our whole class sat down for a super fancy high tea where each got to choose a tea and then got lots of food of mini sandwiches, scones, and desserts. IT WAS INCREDIBLE!

After tea we had the rest of the day off. Me and a couple others walked down Grafton street, a famous shopping street, to stop in a few shops and listen to some Buskers.

Eventually we got pretty tired so we took the bus back to the hotel to relax for an hour. We got some take out pizza for dinner and hung out. We eventually went out to get a drink- I got the basic Guinness (when in Dublin, I guess)- at the oldest pub in Dublin called The Brazen Head, dating back to 1198!!

DAY 54, THURSDAY, MARCH 7TH

Today we started the day around 10 and headed to the EPIC museum. EPIC stands for Every Person is Connected, and the museum was all about Irish culture and Irish emigration. Also- related to our class- it is the first fully digital museum! I really enjoyed museum and all the digital aspects and found it really interesting. I thought the concept itself was really interesting as they had a whole museum dedicated to people who left Ireland usually because of the struggles the country has gone through.

After the museum we grabbed some lunch in the area we were in and relaxed for a couple hours. After that we headed back to Dún Laoghaire area to IADT (Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology). This university is important as it is the birth place of Cyberpsychologdy, the topic of our class. There we attended a lecture by Cyberpsychology PhD student on her research in online dating and specifically how people perceive personality through text in dating profiles. It was a super interesting talk and fun to hear scientific research on stuff very relevant and present. It was also interesting to hear many questions being answered with “there’s no research on that yet” since it’s such a new field! After the lecture we headed back to the city where a few of us stopped in a bookstore before grabbing some burritos for dinner. After dinner we (unsurprisingly) decided we needed a treat so we headed to get Ice cream at Murphy’s (a fairly famous ice cream shop in the city). I had a delicious combo of caramel and sea salt ice creams!

Once we finished chowing down I headed with one of my friends to meet another classmate at an Irish music and dance show!! The show is paired with a 3 course meal but if there are seats left they sell tickets just for the show 15 minutes before it starts. We enjoyed a 2 hour show of live Irish music and dancing, I enjoyed it so much!!! Irish music is so upbeat and it just makes you want to dance!! We also checked a box on the bucket list of one my friends by taking Irish flag shots that are made by 3 liquors to look like an Irish flag! After the show we headed back to the hotel for some rest!
