Hygge Dinner & An Art Museum

DAY 29, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 9TH

My whole family went to the gym to workout this morning before breakfast, so I went on a short run outside.

After everyone was back we had a late breakfast together. After breakfast I started on some laundry and did some homework. Overall it was a pretty lazy day but I got a few things done. I left around 5 to meet up with a couple friends in my homestay network for our hygge dinner.

~~Hygge is a Danish term that is not directly translatable into english but is similar to cosiness or warmth and comfort. It can be used in association with everything- food, events, friends, stores, places, etc. An example of hygge would be family dinners where everyone is home, eating, with candlelight, and talking for hours.~~

A hygge dinner is an event that DIS encourages people in homestay networks to do. DIS will give you a grocery store gift card so you can cook a dinner at one of your homestays and hang out/eat with other people from your network. So me and 3 friends met at the grocery store and bought ingredients for hamburgers, salad, potatoes, dessert, and wine. We went back to one of the girls’ homestays and all cooked together and hung out. After some struggles with the oven we eventually got everything cooked to a solidly mediocre level. It was a really nice evening and the four of us had a lot of fun cooking and talking.

Turns out that the only method of public transportation I could use to get home after midnight was talking the train all the way into the city and then taking the bus all the way back home…. so my host mom was kind enough to pick me up at like 1:30.

DAY 30, SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 10TH

Slept in a bit today and then the family all had a late breakfast together. After breakfast my host mom took me to the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art . It is a leading international museum of modern art located on the coast. The museum combines landscape, architecture, and art for a unique interaction. My host mom has a membership so she was able to get us both in with that. We walked through the Cecily Brown exhibit, the Dea Trier Mørch exhibit, a small pop-art exhibit and a couple other small exhibits. I wasn’t super intrigued by too much of it but I did really like the variety of art in the museum. There was a mix between painting, sculptures, and graphic work. I definitely plan on going back in the warmer months because the building itself and outdoor areas will be beautiful in the spring time. After the museum we came back for a small, late lunch. I worked on some homework for a bit until Amalie came home and we ate Fastenlavnsboller, which is a bun with creme in it and chocolate on top that is a traditional food eaten around the time Fastelavn which is a holiday celebrated the Sunday or Monday before Ash Wednesday. Versions of this holiday are celebrated in many of the Scandinavian countries and can be most easily compared to halloween with an emphasis on kids and candy. The treats and pastries are often eaten and sold throughout February, thus us eating them at home. After the sweet treat we started prepping for dinner which was leftover meat and salad and roasted veggies.
