Pie & Nørrebro

DAY 22, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 2ND

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!!

Today was a pretty lazy day, I woke up for breakfast with the family and spent most of the rest of the day hanging out and making an apple pie! After taking care of my host mom's sister's dog all week we are going over to their house tonight to return the dog and have dinner, and I was asked to make an American apple pie! Although I love making pie and was happy to do it, it usually takes me like 5 hours because I'm so slow in the kitchen lol. Combined with converting measurements and temperatures, no shortening for the crust, and no normal-sized pie pan, I had some difficulty but I eventually figured it out.

At around 5:30 we headed out for dinner at Helle’s sister house. They live in roskilde- a pretty well-known area with the church where most of the royals are buried - which is about 30 minutes away. Their whole family + their DIS students was there and we had a really nice evening with some homemade indian food! The pie turned out pretty well and everyone seemed to like it- and we of course had to eat it with some vanilla ice cream!

DAY 23, SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 3RD

I had nothing scheduled today so I decided to explore with a friend! I met a friend in Nørrebro, a neighborhood of Copenhagen, at 11. This neighborhood is supposed to be a more ethic, diverse, and fun neighborhood- and it definitely was! Our first stop was a park/playground called Superkilen.

Next we went to Assistens Kirkegård (cemetery) and walked around. Cemeteries here, like this one, are also used as a park with lots of trees, paths, and benches.

This cemetery, while impressive in it's own right also is home to Hans Christian Andersen's grave as well as Søren Kierkegaard grave, both very famous Danes. I thought it was cool that visitors had placed pens and pencils at Andersen's grave to celebrate his famous writing.

There was lots of good food as well as ethnic food in this neighborhood we stopped for lunch at a yummy ramen place. After lunch we did some more wandering around and attempted to find some shopping streets I read about but I forgot how much is closed on Sundays here (it surprises me because Denmark, as a whole, is not a super religious country). With that failed attempt we headed over to where the neighborhood borders the water and you can see the bridge that my bus takes to get into the main part of the city

We headed home from there since I needed to do some laundry and packing for core course week coming up. We had a VERY traditional Danish dinner tonight. We had a dish called I stegt flask med Persillesous, which is basically fried pork with potatoes and a parsley cream sauce/ gravy. And then for dessert we had a VERY Traditional Christmas danish dessert called Risalamande- sort of like an almond rice pudding with cherry sauce. Both were delicious and I've loved my family throwing in some very traditional dishes every once and a while! Now it's back to packing and getting ready to head off to western Denmark with my class for a few days!
